FIRST AMONG UNEQUALS

Should that foul weakness,
Religion, ever swamp this mind
Then I would find some credence
Almost some relief, in this stark belief:
That I’d been correct to throw away all hope,
Outlined by Alexander Pope:
"But Satan now is wiser than of yore,
and tempts by making rich,
not making poor."
As secular as I am,
Pope’s words possess some holy rhythm
In this unequal landscape,
This heartless schism,
Where all the power has gone
from aphorisms such as
‘The greedy rich
Are the poorest of the poor’
Yes, Satan rules,
And those still so naïve,
You who believe this insinuates
A moral revolution in the making,
Take a good look at yourself,
Put your Bible on the shelf;
We’re the fools they call ‘hard working’
Whilst they do all the easy taking.
